LW-ECMO (Health Research 2025 -Fundación La Caixa)

The LW-ECMO project aims to integrate our liquid-walled technology into a fully functional extracorporeal life support system by replacing traditional solid-walled components—tubing, pumps, and oxygenators—with liquid-walled analogs that are ultrasoft, frictionless, uncloggable, and stable. This approach has the potential to eliminate the need for anticoagulation by preventing hemolysis, thrombosis, and protein/cell adhesion, ultimately reducing complications and improving outcomes, especially in pediatric patients.

In this project, we work in consortium with the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón to improve liquid-walled Qpumps, develope membrane-less Q-oxy oxygenators, and conducting comparative studies in pediatric swine models to evaluate performance and biological impact against current ECMO technologie
